Watch For The Signs
If you know what to looks for you can help determine if you water is getting ready to fail.
Most people don’t know how old their water heater is. But, if you have no memory of replacing it or it looks like it’s been sitting there a long time, it’s probably time to replace it. Depending on usage, the average water heater lasts just 10 – 12 years.
So, how do you know if your water heater is getting ready to break down? Watch for the signs:
- Brown, rusty water could mean the inside of your water heater is rusting away. It’s only a matter of time before the water heater tank starts leaking and floods your basement.
- Frequently running out of hot water means your water heater tank is filling up with rust, corrosion and sediment. This will seriously affect the efficiency and longevity of your water heater. So, if your 15-minute showers are now 5-minute showers, you need a new water heater.
- Rumbling and grumbling from your water heater tank means sediment in your water heater is building up so much that when it’s heated and reheated it cracks and sends scary sounds through your water pipes.
- It doesn’t take a plumber to know that if you see your water heater sitting in a pool of water it’s done for. When the tank is heated it expands. When it cools it contracts. Over time, this causes small fractures in the metal where water leaks out.
Water heaters aren’t maintenance free. That’s why it’s important to have an annual inspection. Our inspection includes checking the tank and connections for rust and corrosion, testing the pressure relief valve to make sure it’s operational, inspecting the anode rod to see that it’s still able to attract harmful minerals, draining and flushing out sediment and more.
